They stood facing each other. Lily didn’t know what to say. She had stayed in bed all day, and had planned to pretend to be sick the next few days to avoid class and Will. Now he stood on her doorstep. Was she dreaming?

Her mother yelled from the living room, “Who is it?” slightly slurring her words.

Lily remained mum.

“Tell her that it’s a classmate bringing you schoolwork,” he whispered.

She nodded. “It’s a classmate. They brought me my schoolwork.”

“That’s nice,” her mother said from the living room.

“You shouldn’t be here. You need to go,” Lily said.

“No.”

“No?”

“You heard me. No.”

She looked into his eyes and trembled because of the fierceness behind them. His eyes were alight with a fire and belief that Lily had never seen before in him, let alone another person.

“You have to go,” she muttered, starting to close the door.

His hand shot out, grabbed the door, and blocked her from shutting it. “I told you, no. We need to talk. I’m not going away until you hear me out.”

“Will—”

“We can talk here, in the hallway, or go for a walk. Your choice.”

Her mother could walk into the hallway and see them there, and the apartment complex may be awkward for multiple reasons: like whatever Will wanted to say would probably make her cry. She wasn’t dressed for a walk and she doubted he would let her close the door to give her time to change.

So she decided to take a big risk. Her father wouldn’t be home for a few hours and she doubted her mother would question it or disturb her in her room.

“Let’s go into my room and talk.”

Will’s mouth dropped open. “Your room?”

“Yeah. Come on,” she said, motioning with her head for him to come in. “Just be quiet.” She pointed the way and then said out loud, “Mom, my classmate has to show me a few things so…um…she’ll be in my room for a little while.”

“Okay. That’s fine.”

“Thanks.”

Lily heard her mother quietly say that she hoped the girl didn’t get sick, but she ignored it. She looked at Will. He stood in the same spot after having entered the apartment, looking around.

She shut her bedroom door behind them, pulled her desk chair out and gave it to him and sat on her bed.

“I know it’s not much,” she said, watching him look around, feeling embarrassed at her bedroom that looked similar to a mental hospital room: desk, chair, books, bed, and closet for clothes. All white, besides the pink comforter on her bed.

She bit down on her nails, looking at her feet, waiting for him to say something.

He didn’t.

“Can you please just say what you have to say and then go?” Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Don’t be crazy, Lily. Earlier in the day she had decided she had shed enough tears over this boy. She would just stay away from school and stay in her apartment until he left. It would make getting over him easier.

“Lily, I know my move is causing a lot of pain for you and you said that you couldn’t do us anymore, but I’m not going to let that happen.
